Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the reader to knowledge modeling and to the distinction between business intelligence techniques which are based on knowledge from those which are based on data and information. The different types of knowledge and the main knowledge models are presented. Particular reference is included to ontologies and rule-based systems and basic points on the concepts and usefulness of the related technologies are included. Simple examples are also given to enable the understanding of the related philosophy and bibliographic references are available to the readers who wish further deepening in the field. A representative application of a knowledge-based decision support system from the field of touristic marketing is presented.
