Description:
Abstract:
The present book in Greek, entitled "Introduction to Atmospheric Physics", presents selective topics of atmospheric science, by applying simple mathematical approaches and comprehensive physical descriptions. Besides the 1st chapter which offers a basic overview on the earth's atmosphere, the book's contents are distributed in 6 chapters, each dealing with a thematic branch, mostly in relation with the physics of the lower atmosphere. The chapters here include elements of: atmospheric hydrostatics, thermodynamics, cloud physics, atmospheric dynamics, atmospheric electricity, and solar/terrestrial radiation effects in the atmosphere. This book is useful to undergraduate students of physics, but also to students enrolled in disciplines of natural sciences, who take an introductory course in atmospheric science.
Table of Contents:
Chapter 1. The earth's atmosphere (chemical composition, evolution, variations of temperature and density with altitude, homosphere, heterosphere, exosphere, escape of light constituents, lighting, ionosphere, magnetosphere)

Chapter 2. Atmosphere in hydrostatic balance (field of gravity, geopotential, hydrostatic pressure and hydrostatic equation of the atmosphere, isothemal atmosphere, scale height, gravitational separation of air constituents, molecular diffusion)

Chapter 3. Atmospheric thermodynamics (application of ideal gas laws to the air, humid air and humidity parameters, application of thermodynamic laws to the atmosphere, cloud thermodynamics, thermodynamic processes of air masses, atmospheric stability, Stüve diagram and applications)

Chapter 4. Cloud Physics (cloud morphology and types, atmospheric aerosols, homogeneous and heterogeneous condensation, Kohler equation and applications, mechanisms of droplet growth in clouds, mechanisms of precipitation)

Chapter 5. Atmospheric dynamics (atmospheric forces, Coriolis, frictional and pressure forces, theoretical description of air motions, equation of motion, continuity and energy equation, geostrophic, sub- and hyper-geostrophic wind, gradient wind, cyclones and anticyclones, thermal atmospheric circulation, generation of pressure gradients, planetary circulation)

Chapter 6. Atmospheric electricity (atmospheric charges, conductivity, electric fields, and changes with altitude, electric system of earth-atmosphere, electrical discharges and lightning, global electrical circuit, transient luminous events, sprites, elves)

Chapter 7. Radiation in the Atmosphere (laws of blackbody radiation, solar radiation, solar spectrum bands, absorption in the atmosphere, scattering, photoionization, photodissociation, solar radiation and ozone, terrestrial radiation and its absorption in the atmosphere, greenhouse gases and effects, formation of the ionosphere, ionization production and loss mechanisms, ionospheric structure and layers.)
