Description:
Abstract:
Aquaculture is a growing industry, with Greece being the sixth among the forty European countries in the production of farmed fish. The subject of aquaculture is taught in more than 10 departments of the Greek Universities. The book AQUACULTURE: ORGANISMS, PRODUCTION SYSTEMS, PERSPECTIVES aims to cover the basic knowledge needed for the University graduates of biological and related schools. Herein, the traditional and modern aquaculture systems implemented today or being in experimental stage are examined. More specifically, the following topics are covered: a) aspects of the biology of cultured organisms (taxonomy, nutrition, reproduction, diseases, genetics), b) industrial production trends at a global, European, and national level, c) the facilities used and methodologies applied for broodstock collection, production of fry, fattening and harvesting c) the concerns arising from the application of aquaculture and the prospects for the future.
