Abstract:
The medieval period is crucial for the history of the Balkans, since it was then when the genesis of many Balkan peoples took place. The starting point can safely be set in the 7th century, for it was then when the settlement of the Slavs largely changed the ethnological character of the region, pinpointing the start of new era. This study ends in the 11th century when the dynamic of unifying the Balkan peninsula by Bulgarian agency came to an abrupt end giving its place to the Byzantine empire playing that role.
